How do we destroy items now?

In the previous version I would light a fire on all the items I wanted rid of and it would destroy them. In the new version it says this is not possible. The original reason was to prevent slow downs of too many items either on the ground or in the chests on the previous version that would happen over time.

Edit: After some more testing it seems I was trying to light the fire on sand to destroy the items. Still works on dirt. Tried to delete the forum posting, but was unable to.
